New Salem is only 20 mi (32 km) northwest of Springfield, but manages to transport visitors back roughly 150 years to the early days of Abraham Lincoln. The townsite has stores, businesses and homes set up to represent what New Salem may have looked like in the mid-1800s. There is a visitor's center, an ampitheatre and a concession stand available. Campsites are on the grounds to accommodate guests.
